“The Wand” is music to the ears of patients with a fear of needles. The Wand is a device that administers local numbing agents without the discomfort and anxiety that accompanies traditional syringes. How sweet does that sound?
The idea of a an injection or large area being numbed is enough to scare some folks away from the dentist’s for good. The Wand is very different, however. The Wand is a slim little pen that has a tube attached to a small computer. The computer automatically dispenses the anesthesia through an extremely small needle at a slow and steady rate so that you don’t feel the usual injection sensation of stinging or burning. This is the part, which makes regular injections uncomfortable.
The Wand is also nice because it’s easier for the dentist to hold and maneuver. The dentist’s hand won’t get tired, and you get the spot-on dose of anesthesia you need to make your dental treatment comfortable. With the Wand, anesthesia is infiltrated into one specific area – not the entire side of your mouth.
Finding a “Magic Wand”
Some dentists don’t use the Wand because they’ve come to rely upon tried-and-true techniques for making the injection experience smoother for their patients. These techniques often work just fine, but some patients need something more to put their mind at ease.
If a Wand injection device sounds right up your alley, then go ahead and do a little digging. Ask your local dentist about the pain management techniques and technology offered in the office. Seek out a dental professional who can give you the treatment you need at the comfort level you request.
