What exactly is oral surgery? Well, it includes anything from a simple extraction to wisdom tooth removal to dental implant placement. The type of surgery really just depends on what treatment is going to be necessary; but there’s one thing that they all have in common – the need for comfort. Thankfully, oral sedation is a safe, effective, and easy way to achieve the comfort necessary for most patients.
Oral sedation uses prescription medication that creates a sleep-like sensation as well as acts as an amnesiac. About an hour after taking it, you feel like you’re dreaming your way right through your dental appointment. Occasionally some people require a second dose at the time of their appointment, to achieve a more significant response if the dose is very mild. In all cases your dentist will closely monitor you and take additional precautions to ensure your safety at all times.
Although you’ll be mostly unaware of what’s going on around you, you will still be able to answer short, straightforward questions or instructions. For instance, if you’re asked to open your mouth, you will be able to do so. Since the medication is an amnesiac though, you most likely won’t remember a single thing about the appointment.
If you need to have some type of oral surgery completed, oral sedation can be one of the simplest ways to ensure your comfort throughout the process. To be a licensed oral sedation dentist, additional training and certification is required. Ask your dentist if he or she offers sedation dentistry in their office and don’t put your oral health care off any longer!
