Waking up With Sore Jaws or Headaches

Problems associated with TMJ Disorder, or teeth clenching are sometimes most evident early in the morning. People who are experiencing stressful life events such as loss of a job, death of a family member, or other major event may find that they are waking up in the mornings with very sore or tense muscles of the jaw. This pain can radiate into the ear, mouth, neck and shoulders if it is severe enough. While reduction in stress can eliminate the pain over time, sometimes these tendencies become chronic. Long term grinding or clenching can damage the joint area as well as cause premature or abnormal wear of the teeth.

Sleeping with a professionally fitted mouth guard can prevent the TMJ area from becoming strained, and eliminate advanced wear from occurring. What a bite guard does is slightly move the lower jaw into a resting position. This prevents teeth from clenching or wearing together, and positions the jaw joint in a way that does not strain the muscles. When the jaw is completely closed, it strains the muscles to the full extent, and can damage the disc within the joint. Not to mention that teeth often become worn flat, develop sharp edges, or may even become fractured if grinding is severe enough.

There are different types of bite guards available depending on your needs and preferences. Most guards are easily made by your dentist for same-day pickup. The benefits of a custom fitted guard compared to an over-the-counter guard is that the snug fit will comfortably stay in place throughout the night, without becoming cumbersome to wear. They also last much longer as it is almost impossible to wear through the material.
