Excess clenching and grinding causes enamel to rub up against itself, and enamel is the hardest structure in the entire human body. The result is flat, worn teeth, broken enamel along the gumlines, and even broken restorations. In addition to causing wear on the surface of the teeth, it can also lead to Tempormandibular Joint Disorders (TMD). Many people that experience teeth grinding will also cause their partners to loose sleep at night as well. Now people who clench or grind their teeth while they sleep, can be fitted with a custom made nightguard, which will prevent it.
The process to get the nightguard is simple and only requires a couple of visits to the dentist’s office. During the first visit, the dentist will take an impression of your teeth. The impression is then sent to a dental lab where the dental laboratory technician will create a custom nightguard that will only fit your mouth. The nightguard, which is made of a clear hard plastic material, is then sent back to the dentist’s office in a week to 10 days. On the second visit, the dentist will make sure that the nightguard fits your teeth properly. In some cases, the dentist will need to make minor adjustments in order to make sure that it fits properly.
The nightguard is worn on the upper teeth and often “snaps” into place when worn. A tight fit is preferred because it prevents the nightguard from being “spit out” while you sleep. Since it is made from a hard plastic, the nightguard will last for years if properly stored in the case that is provided. There is no special care required beyond cleaning the nightguard on a regular basis.
