Lemons, Strawberries, and Other Fruit
If you’ve looked through social media sites for “DIY Teeth Whitening,” you’ve likely seen suggestions like “rubbing a lemon across your teeth three times a day to erase stains,” or something similar with a strawberry. While this may seem completely natural (after all, it is food you would consider healthy to eat), the long-term exposure to your tooth enamel creates acid erosion. Yes, the teeth may initially appear whiter at first, but then they will become thin, darker yellow, brittle and sensitive.
Using baking soda as a cleanser for your teeth is something that has been done for a few generations. While it’s great for buffing out stains around the house, it is extremely abrasive. Used long term, it will scratch your teeth and cause gum recession.
Rinsing with hydrogen peroxide is another form of DIY whitening. After all, peroxide is actually an ingredient in most whitening kits. Unfortunately, the short contact time with the liquid won’t do a lot of difference in the long run, and it can actually alter the natural flora in the rest of your mouth, creating odd side effects that change the way your gums and tongue look.
The quickest, most effective way to whiten your teeth is with a set of professionally fitted whitening trays and gel, or in a one-hour whitening session with your dentist. The results can be maintained to last a lifetime.
