Not all of us are born with Hollywood-white smiles. In fact, some of us were born with or developed tooth enamel that was actually discolored. Anything from medications that we took, illnesses we had as a child, or the water supply where we grew up can impact the color of our tooth enamel. Reversing severe tooth stains like these can be a huge challenge. In most cases, over the counter products won’t even hold a candle to professional whitening treatments delivered by a dentist.
In-office whitening is the most aggressive way to target these deep-set stains. During the treatment, a high-grade whitening gel is applied to the tooth and then a bright light helps accelerate the whitening process. This takes about 10-15 minutes and the gel is then rinsed away and re-applied 3 or 4 more times. With deep developmental stains, a few more applications may be all that is needed and the results will be significant.
Following up with a professionally made whitening tray will help you stretch your results even further. Wearing the tray for at least one hour a day for 10-14 days will give you the most effective results possible. Some people are able to use a whitening tray without the in-office whitening session, but this will depend on the amount of stain present and the recommendations of your dentist.
Some people will still experience mild discoloration, but it in general it is much less noticeable after the whitening treatment. If the damage is too severe, your dentist may want to discuss another type of procedure with you, such as bonding or veneers.
