If you’ve heard about traditional dental bridges, then you need to hear about a similar treatment with a modern twist – dental implant bridges. They look just like a traditional bridge, but with a few significant differences.
Implant bridges can:
With a dental implant bridge, each end of the bridge is supported by an artificial implant root (as opposed to a prepped natural tooth.) Since dental implants are extremely strong, they can support a much longer prosthesis than what is involved in a traditional bridge, sometimes spanning as long as 4 teeth at a time. Implant roots are also fused directly into the bone, which allows them to last an entire lifetime when cared for properly. Even if the restoration on top of it wears out, the implant roots will not. Traditional bridges can only be placed if the supporting teeth are healthy enough, and they require alteration of those teeth as well.
What is the treatment process for an implant supported bridge? For starters, your implants will need to be placed and allowed to fuse with the bone as the surgical site heals. In 3-6 months, there will be enough new bone development that the implants will be ready to support the fixed prosthesis. All that is needed is a short installation appointment, and you’ll be on your way with a permanent bridge that lasts for several years.
Are you missing teeth? It can cause more harm to your smile than good. Ask your dentist if an implant supported bridge is an option for you.
