CBCT 3D Scans: How They Have Transformed Implant Placement

When an implant is place, location is very important. The head is a complex structure of human anatomy made up of interconnecting and overlapping parts including sinuses, blood vessels, nerves, bone, and more. An implant cannot be placed just anywhere! For the implant to last indefinitely, optimum placement is essential. How do cone-beam computed tomography three-dimensional (CBCT 3D) scans help?

Aren’t Regular X-Rays Enough?

In some cases, no, traditional x-rays are not sufficient to map the placement of an implant.

Traditional x-rays provide a two-dimensional image, only. This limits what the dentist can see as far as the bone pattern and possible obstacles to placement. A CBCT 3D scan conveys a more accurate reflection of how all the head’s structures are arranged so that the implant can be placed in the optimal position. This technology individualizes the treatment plan even further by allowing for virtual implant placement, with the right computer software. In utilizing this program, a surgeon can visualize the end result. This improves chances of success after an implant is placed.

What is Cone-Beam Computed Tomography Three-Dimensional Imaging?

That’s a mouthful!

The CBCT 3D scan is a variant of the more commonly-known CT scan. Used in the dental field, an x-ray beam rotates around the head, and provides a three-dimensional image of all it sees. This uses the minimum amount of radiation possible, and is not used as a routine part of your dental checkups. This imaging system provides very treatment-specific information which is essential in many cases of implant placement.
