One of the most common causes of difficulty chewing is a cavity. Cavities are open holes in the teeth, that will produce sensitivity and pain when hot or cold items, and sometimes sweet items, come in contact with the tooth. If your pain is isolated to a specific tooth, you may have a cavity or single tooth damage. Your dentist can determine the exact cause.
Other problems may come from having loose teeth or ill-fitting dentures. This may be caused from a change in your jaw bone itself. Finally, pain may arise from sores in your mouth.
Having difficulties chewing can result in poor nutritional status. If you cannot chew properly, it is very difficult to eat a well-balanced meal. Poor nutrition can cause you to have other problems, including increased susceptibility to infection or illnesses, feelings of fatigue and vitamin and mineral deficiencies. If you cannot chew, schedule an appointment with your dentist right away. In the meantime, try to eat soft foods with a mild temperature to remain adequately nourished.
The bottom line? If you are having problems chewing, you should see your dentist as soon as possible. Delays in seeking treatment could cost you more than your smile, they could be bad for your overall health.
