  1. Opening Packages With Your Teeth

Here’s one almost EVERYBODY has attempted. We’ve all been in that situation where we didn’t have scissors handy and just had to get that bag of chips open.

As useful and tough as your teeth are, try to not use them as tools! This is how unexpected fractures happen.

  1. Chewing On Your Tongue, Lip, Or Cheek

This habit is pretty insidious – it happens so easily without you knowing it! It’s kind of like nail-biting, but seems more sanitary since you aren’t putting your hands in your mouth.

The biggest concern is that chronic (though shallow) injury to soft tissues in your mouth can trigger dangerous growths later on. This doesn’t mean you’ll definitely get cancer, but it could be a contributing factor.

  1. Tongue-Thrusting

What is tongue-thrusting?

It’s simply the unconscious habit of pushing your tongue against the back of your front teeth. A lot of people don’t realize they have this problem until a dentist shows them how it’s caused their buck-toothed look. Many times, it’s the result of extended thumb-sucking or pacifier use as a child. It can create an “open bite” where your front teeth don’t close together properly.

  1. Ice Chewing

For some people, chewing on ice satisfies an odd craving. For others, it’s just a habit to nosh on the crunchy cubes in their soda. Either way, frequently eating ice is not good for teeth.

Tooth fractures, enamel wear, sensitivity, and loose fillings can all result from an ice crunching habit.

Three Habits that are Hard on Teeth

Want to know what your everyday habit could be doing to your smile? Some habits you might already know about while others are the furthest thing from your mind. Here are 3 everyday habits that could be destroying your teeth:  


Smoking and smokeless tobacco create changes to the tissues in your mouth, which in turn put you at risk of losing your teeth. Gum tissues begin experiencing cellular changes caused by the smoke and tobacco products that in turn prevents adequate blood flow to the teeth. As a result, gums begin to recede and detach from the teeth. 

Chewing Ice

Having the craving to chew ice could be a symptom of anemia, but it’s a bad habit that is hard to break. If you have restorations like fillings or crowns, chewing ice can cause irreversible damage. The cold temperatures cause materials to expand and contract, making them break apart from your tooth even sooner. Chewing on the hard material can also cause porcelain to break away from crowns, leaving you with aesthetic problems to consider. 

Sipping on an Afternoon Beverage

A lot of us like to have our favorite drink at our desk to sip on through the afternoon. It may be diet soda, flavored coffee, or even sipping on a sports drink when you’re at the gym. These liquids contain natural and artificial sweeteners that cause decay. If we sip on them for an hour or more, that’s a lot of acid exposure to our teeth. In fact, it will cause more tooth decay by drinking it over a longer period of time than it will if you were to drink it all at once during a meal. For healthier teeth, drink water between meals. Water hydrates and cleans your mouth as you drink it.

Three Habits that Hurt Your Teeth

When you think about hurting your teeth, most people think about things like eating candy, not brushing, or chewing gum. Although those are things that can in some ways be troublesome to your teeth, there are 3 more frequent “dental sins” that destroy smiles on an everyday basis. 

Not Flossing

Your hygienist isn’t joking when she tells you that you have to floss the teeth that you want to keep. Brushing physically cannot clean between the teeth, and if you’re not flossing then nothing is. When plaque builds up between the teeth, cavities form and gum disease triggers bone loss to occur. Eventually this bone loss will cause your teeth to fall out! 

Drinking Diet Soda

Regular soda is bad for your smile. The acids and sugars inside of it coat the surfaces of your teeth and cause rampant tooth decay. Coincidentally, a lot of people jump to drinking diet soda, assuming that it’s healthier for them since it’s “free” of sugar. Although there are artificial sweeteners used, diet soda still contains sugars that cause acidic biofilm, and has a low pH level. What does that mean? Diet sodas cause just as much tooth decay as regular sodas do. 

Opening Things With Your Teeth

Opening a beer bottle, prying open a bobby pin, or tearing open a package with your front teeth can cause abnormal wear or even chipping of the enamel. Take a few more seconds of your time and find a different way to get the job done (without your teeth!) 

See your dentist twice each year for a check-up and cleaning. They will help you pinpoint areas that need more care, so that you can avoid everyday complications like cavities and gum disease.
