Essential Oils for Gum Health

When it comes to treating gum disease symptoms like swollen, bleeding gums, essential oils can be a key part of your daily oral care routine. While using essential oils may seem to be a foreign concept to many people, they’ve actually been used in many over the counter products for several years. One popular line of mouth rinses uses essential oils as their key ingredient.

Directly using one or two drops of essential oils on your toothbrush, or in a cup of water as a mouth rinse not only helps improve the health of your gums, it also improves chronic bad breath. Take care to not use too much, as direct contact with the skin can cause tissue irritation or burning. Pure oils or blends that are mixed specifically for oral health can be found through health food stores or other holistic online retailers. Some types of essential oils that are useful in improving plaque control and gum disease include:

  • Tea tree
  • Eucalyptus
  • Mint
  • Lavender
  • Rosemary
  • …And several others

The oils work by decreasing bleeding and suppressing inflammation in areas of active infection. When combined with exceptional oral care habits, essential oils can speed up a person’s recovery from gum disease or gingivitis. Using the oils as a mouth rinse can also be useful for patients undergoing orthodontic therapy to prevent tissue inflammation.

Essential oils help destroy disease causing bacteria in the mouth, allowing gum tissues to stay cleaner for a longer period of time and improving their health. Effects from the oils last 2-3 hours after their use. People that suffer from bad breath due to gum disease may find that essential oils are one of the most effective ways to eliminate (not cover up) their halitosis.
