Vitamin C for Healing
Vitamin C boosts your overall immune system and helps you to fight off infection. A strengthened immune system will power your gums to resist the inflammation that starts with gingivitis. It also speeds up your gums’ healing ability.
Chewing Gum for Cleaning
Gum chewing between meals stimulates saliva flow. Lots of saliva rinses away harmful bacteria in dental plaque. Make sure that the gum you choose is sugar-free. Xylitol is an excellent sugar substitute in chewing gum because it helps to control the number of cavity-causing bacteria.
Avoid Foods That Get Stuck
If you have periodontal pocketing around one or more teeth or gum recession, then you may be prone to getting certain foods stuck between teeth and under the gum line. Some small food pieces can get impacted in hard-to-reach areas and cause irritation. Try to avoid things like:
Healthy Body, Healthy Gums
Eat to promote your overall health and your gums will benefit, as well. A diet rich in nutrients, fresh items, whole grains, and low in salt and refined carbohydrates is the key to staying well and fighting disease.
Visit your dentist for an assessment of your current gum health. You will also get recommendations for diet and oral hygiene changes that can boost your gums’ ability to resist disease. With wise food choices, you can help your gums stay healthy for a lifetime!

It is no secret that “you are what you eat.” If you want to have a healthy body, you have to take care of your body. One way to live healthier is to make healthier food choices. More specifically, what are some healthier food choices to have healthier gums?
1) Green Tea- If you drink a daily cup of green tea, you can reduce the risk of developing gum disease. Green tea has anti-oxidants that help to reduce inflammation which promotes healthy gums.
2) Whole Grains- Whole grains are digested more slowly which avoids spikes in blood sugar. This also lowers the body’s production of inflammatory proteins and as a result, lowers the risk of heart disease and gum disease.
3) Raisins- Raisins contain anti-oxidants that fight the growth of a type of bacteria that causes inflammation and gum disease.
4) Leafy Greens- The vegetables found in salads are beneficial for keeping your mouth clean because they are full of fiber, which require a lot of chewing to break the food down. The extra chewing produces more saliva to help neutralize the bacteria in your mouth, which promotes healthier teeth and gums. In addition, the vitamins and anti-oxidants in the vegetables promote good overall health.
5) Strawberries and Kiwis- You need Vitamin C to promote good overall health and gum health is no different. Strawberries and Kiwis contain high concentrations of vitamin C which help to fight gum disease.
Consider the above healthy food choices, if you want to promote healthier gums. This was not an inclusive food list. Rather, it will hopefully give you some suggestions to get started choosing snacks that can encourage healthier gums.

Do you hate flossing? Has your dentist told you that without flossing every day that there’s no way for you to manage or reverse your gum disease symptoms? If so, you’ll be thrilled to know that there’s an alternative to flossing available that is just as, if not more, effective.
Water flossing uses a steady, pressurized stream of water to flush biofilm out of areas that even flossing can’t reach. Areas between the teeth can be gently cleaned without the irritation or bleeding that flossing often causes. The stream of water is traced along the gumlines, irrigating the periodontal pocket under the gum tissue that harbors bacteria that causes bone loss and gum disease. The best time to begin water flossing is after your professional dental cleaning, when your mouth is completely clean of tartar and plaque. Daily water flossing will prevent new deposits from forming on the teeth, and keep your mouth cleaner than ever: all without having to pick up a string of floss ever again.
