When you get a filling, you want it to be as small as possible. Why? Because the larger the cavity is, the more structural damage it has done to your tooth. Treating the cavity when it’s first found can keep your tooth stronger. Not only that, but because treatments are less invasive, they’re quicker and more affordable to complete.
Here are 3 ways you can keep your fillings as small as possible:
Treat Your Cavity as Soon as it is Found
If your dentist finds a cavity on your tooth, get it treated right away. Even waiting a few months before having it fixed can let the decay spread deeper into your tooth. Decay can even “jump” to other teeth, causing brand new cavities.
See Your Dentist Regularly
Your dentist screens for demineralized areas that will eventually turn into cavities if left untreated. Dentists also take X-Rays or uses lasers to help find cavities that aren’t visible during the exam. Putting these visits off longer than every 6 months may give your cavity time to get fairly large before you start experiencing symptoms.
Use Floss and Fluoride
Even if you’re the best brusher in the world, toothbrushing won’t clean between your teeth; you’ve got to floss. Flossing eliminates cavities that form between the teeth. You might also want to use a fluoride rinse at night, to help remineralize areas that are beginning to form cavities (before they actually do.)
If you still get a cavity, don’t beat yourself up. Your dentist will provide you with oral hygiene instructions and dietary tips that can help you prevent it from happening again. Until then, take care of your teeth so that they will take care of you!

Items such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy are all good choices for meal planning and snacks. Lean protein sources such as lean beef, poultry and fish are also good choices.
Excessive snacking has been shown to not only be bad for your waistline, but also for your mouth. The more you snack throughout the day, the lower the amount of saliva production you have. Saliva helps to wash away bad bacteria in your mouth, and helps prevent gum disease and cavities.
