Top Foods for Healthy, White Teeth

It is safe to say that everyone would like to have healthy teeth and a sparkling white smile. Unfortunately, there are many foods and other products which we consume on a daily basis that contribute to the discoloration and even the decay of teeth. On the other hand, current research has shown that many foods contribute to the development of healthy white teeth.

  • Citrus fruits increase the flow of saliva in the mouth which protects the teeth against bacteria.
  • Cheese and milk have been shown to encourage salivation which counteracts the production of acids in the mouth. The calcium and phosphorus in these foods also have a neutralizing effect on the action of acid-forming foods.
  • Water consumption helps greatly in ridding the mouth of acid-forming foods which can cause decay and discoloration of the teeth.
  • Strawberries have been shown to promote healthy white teeth because of certain properties inherent in the fruits. Specifically, the malic acid in strawberries acts as an astringent wash for the teeth, while the vitamin C works to dissolve plaque.

The consumption of these and other healthy foods such as apples, celery and raw vegetables not only encourage the flow of saliva in the mouth thereby assisting in ridding the mouth of acids and bacteria, but also have a cleansing effect on the gums. This is important since healthy gums improve the chances of having healthy teeth.

Teeth whitening may be another option for getting the healthy, attractive look of white teeth.  While the consumption of certain foods will contribute to the development of healthy white teeth, it is important to maintain a daily regimen of good oral care. The healthy habits of brushing after each meal and flossing regularly taught to us as small children still hold, but we have additional help in the form of many teeth-whitening foods.
