What Foods and Drinks Trigger Decay the Most?

Certain types of foods have a bad reputation among dental patients as those that may cause them to have more tooth decay. Surprisingly enough, some of the foods that people thing are actually healthier types of snacks may be the ones that are the actual culprits of recurrent tooth decay. Sure, candy can be bad for your teeth, but the fact is that most people don’t eat candy every day because they know it’s not good for them. A little candy every now and then isn’t going to make all of your teeth get cavities in them. Instead, let’s talk about some foods and drinks that you may be having on a daily basis, which may be greatly compromising your dental health.

Sports Drinks and Diet Soda (and Juice!)

Regular soda is bad on your teeth, but diet soda, fruit juices, and sports drinks are just as bad. All of them lower the pH in your mouth, and since they’re in liquid form they coat just about every surface of every tooth. Consumed on a frequent basis 2 or 3 times a day every day, and you’re pretty much setting yourself up for dental problems.

Chewy Fruit Snacks

Kids love gummy fruit snacks, and parents love that the label says they come loaded with vitamins! Their sticky texture may actually cause the food to cling into susceptible tooth surfaces for a long period of time, which can be bad for your child’s newly developing teeth.

Acidic Foods

Whether it’s lemons, candy, drinks or snacks, acidic foods will cause your enamel to erode and be susceptible to decay. People that habitually suck on lemons have visible signs of enamel erosion that leaves their teeth thin and weak. Enamel cannot grow back on its own, so these kind of areas are only able to be repaired with a dental filling, crown, or other dental restoration.
