Reducing Stain on Your Teeth

Different types of food and drinks can create darker stains on your teeth than others. For instance, red wine, tea and coffee are a normal part of many people’s diets, but they are some of the heaviest stain producers of any regular drinks. If you smoke, you’re up for even more stain particles accumulating on your teeth. As all of this stain builds up over time, it can make our smiles look dingy or even older than it really is.

Limiting the contact time your teeth have with stain particles helps, but not many people want to drink their red wine through a straw (although this would work for iced tea!) Instead, it may be necessary to take some steps at home to help prevent new stain particles from accumulating within the surface of the enamel. Using an electric toothbrush will increase the amount of strokes made on your teeth during toothbrushing, and can help reduce the number of particles that set into the teeth. Whitening products such as toothpastes or rinses can help prevent new stain from building up, but may not remove stain that has already set into the teeth. Over the counter whitening kits have the potential to remove mild to moderate staining, but because they do not provide custom fitted devices, the whitening results often appear uneven or patchy.

Professional teeth whitening kits and gels are the most effective products available for removing deep-set, heavy dental stain. Custom kits keep the highly concentrated gel along all surface of the teeth, allowing deep stain particles to be oxygenated and broken apart as they are flushed away from the enamel. For dramatic whitening results, ask your dentist about which type of professional whitening treatment is best for your teeth.
