Like it or not, your smile creates an immediate impression on the people you meet. A brighter smile gives the impression of health, youth, beauty, happiness, and warmth. It invites people to you, drawing them in so that they feel comfortable and accepted. A dingy, stained smile also creates an impression – but it is not the impression that most people are going for. To many, a dingy smile gives people the feeling that you don’t take good care of your teeth, that you probably have bad breath, and both of those leave others feeling like they would prefer to back away rather than draw close. Teeth whitening is one of the easiest ways to enhance your smile – easiest on the budget, and easiest in the length of time it takes to see results.
According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, up to 99.7% of adults believe that a smile is an important social aspect. A bright, attractive smile makes a person more appealing to the opposite sex. Although law suits could abound from this, most adults also feel that an unattractive smile can hurt their chance for professional advancement.
While it may seem overly dramatic on paper, one only needs to people watch for just a little while to see how a confident smile radiates on a person’s face. People who tend to feel self conscious about the appearance of their smiles tend to smile with closed lips or put their hands up at their faces when speaking or laughing. Both of these behaviors do not draw people in, but rather send the message “back away.” If you are not happy with your smile, teeth whitening is often the first step toward enhancing your smile.
Teeth naturally darken with age, and diet and habits can also discolor the teeth. There are a number of ways to whiten the teeth, but often people with bad diets and habits will not see desired results until they have improved in these areas. Smoking must be stopped for teeth whitening results to be effective, and limiting sugar intake and staining drinks (coffee, tea, and sodas) will also improve results. Teeth whitening can be done in the dentist’s office or at home. Depending on the amount of staining and discoloration that needs to be improved will determine which method is right for you. If you want a brighter, more confident smile that invites people in, talk to your dentist about teeth whitening. S/he will know which method is going to give you the best results for the smile you desire.
